My world

Today’s adventure..

100_9149 100_9152

I don’t have proper display tables or cabinets, so to protect stuff, it goes in boxes..then into bigger boxes. Or in this case a locking chest.

I got busy rooting around..and had the pleasure of discovering a few things all over again.. jade bowls for instance, I like mottled jade because it has that camo thing going, which strike me as funny.. chests of amber..fossils, crystal balls that are unusual in a number of ways…

But we all have our fascinations….

Netsuke kept turning up at random intervals…along with a complete albit small sino-hadrosarus, a box of space junk and some moldovites that were laying out at random..

It’s so much fun to rummage through boxes, its like a big easter egg hunt with a touch of hide and seek…or finding pirate treasure…

Now I want dinner… except I’m worn out from moving a literal ton of stuff around..

Ok not that worn out.. just saying.

Enter the dragon..

Aside from dinner, straight razors and getting bucked off the bicycle on a regular basis..

I go through my loot collections, it’s a nice break… sort of like a visit too a museum back room where everything is interesting… and kept in boxes.

African trade beads… jade bowls, netsuke, defunct coinage and currency from defunct empires.. pre-money trade items, stuff that fell from the sky… the work of silversmiths I admire…or things so obscure only one person in a hundred has a clue…

It’s all about provenance and history.. art and workmanship… sometimes antiquity and the OMG factor….

Which entertains me no end….

Spice cabinet and large bunny..

100_9106

I found a cabinet to use for a spice cabinet or proofing box.. its pretty nice, the door is beveled glass… which is worth several times more than the cabinet… and it’s big enough for chilis..and ageing, fermenting or whatever… proofing is humid so it has to be an either or deal to protect the spices.

About the the bunny… which is sitting on the new cabinet, with my bike in the foreground for scale…..

The neighbor nearly fell over laughing when the delivery showed up.. he was asking the driver “wtf is it?”, as I rolled up on my bike..

So I told him it’s going to be the new shop night light and he started laughing again…

Like he doesn’t have a mannequin dressed in moto-cross gear outside his shop…

But I seem to fit in, which is a nice change.. My projects, quirks, insomnia and privacy issues tend to drive normal neighbors up the wall..

I be has cheese….

100_9076

Said cheese has absolutely nothing to do with anything…at the moment.

What I do have is tracking info on a package that’s been bounced back and forth between the US and New Zealand for over a year.

Customs got all snooty over a bottle of mead, which the sender had been assured by NZ postal was fine to send and it all went down hill from there..

Apparently sending is OK, clearing US customs and actual delivery is a different issue…

I have no idea whats in it…. aside from opal rough and an I phone…

Tracking says the package is in Phoenix….. so I need to go find out when to stand and stare at the mail box, as well as for how long..

Its all about excitement….

About to be smoked tounge

One Beef tongue

100_9038

One Beef tongue trimmed, mostly because it wouldn’t fit in my little crock pot as is

100_9041

The tongue ended up in the deep fryer.. which gets used as an emergency crock pot but has better temperature controls any way…

100_9045

And there it abides for a few hours in pickling spices at which point it gets peeled and smoked…the trim went into the pot as well.. waste not want not.. besides Berto likes it when he gets extras.

As a side note…

Smoked tongue runs about $15 per pound and that’s just because its not fashionable..

Hibiscus tea..

100_9008

The claret glass is just because the color of the tea is so nice.

I really need to work on the photography end of things, I know how to deal with glare, flash, lighting, reflection, back drops and do a good job of it..

But personal stuff is sort of slap dash, point and click..

No excuses though…

I wanted the tea more than the photo… it was one of those “I want it NOW” moods and setting up the light cube cuts into the much desired instant gratification..

Hibiscus tea is sort of a special occasion, company thing.. except today there was no company and no special occasion, other than getting thrown by my bicycle for the second time in a week..but riding a bike down stairs probably wasn’t a good idea, even if it seemed so at the time…

There may be an impulse control issue in there somewhere…which explains a lot..

Random interests

100_8638Aside from work, dinner and baking.. I collect, buy and sell (in theory) mastodon ivory netsuke, dragons mostly, but I go for daily life scenes as well.. bakers, brewers, archers etc, which reflect my personal interests.. or because the work is exceptional… netsuke and jade bowls were my reward for holding it together one more season, under arguably brutal working conditions..

They meet the high value, small size criteria. my habitat/lifestyle requires…

Each and every one has a story… a who, what, when, where and how it was acquired..

The why is more convoluted..

The colorful Interior shot…

018100_8140013016Aside from dinner, its about books, all things shiny, study, work, hiding out and generally living like a medieval monk.

It’s mostly quiet… not counting whatever racket I generate or music that amuses my neighbors…

Unpacking is still being done… its an “as needed” thing, not to mention an unsettling commitment to staying put..

My house has wheels for a reason..

Spices, chilis, meat and other life essentials…

100_8981I don’t have time today to make a pickling mix or deal with a depleted pantry… I’m due to get bulk spices in about a month when they reopen the shop.. So for now its my beloved El Guapo back up spices from Bashas..

They have a lot of bulk stuff but sadly, not everything I use, still it’s good for what it is…

And it’s a project thing, so ya do what ya gotta do…..

The project is smoked beef tongue… which got justified simply because it was cheaper than hamburger.. and better than most beef cuts I can recall and its just beefy goodness.

While picking up the tongue, I spotted some briskets that were cheaper still, ($3.50 a pound) but the weight brought the price up to $40+ and it was so big it would take forever to eat the thing…

But who knows… and I drifted off track, maybe I can cut, pack and freeze it in 5 pound chunks.. except its still a years worth of indulgence.. unless the butcher can be connived into selling me a smaller piece.. or the corned beef option kicks in once my smoked brisket issue is dealt with…

Maybe a whole brisket is not a bad idea.. corned beef and cabbage is in my DNA, winter is on the way, its a good budget ‘bang for the food buck’ move, and various other self-serving, justifications.

Then I returned to reality and made a quick get away…

Things are busy enough as they are..

018 100_8140 100_8141 016 427I write mostly about cooking because its kind of a big deal, its major part, but not all of life. Infrastructure is a factor as well.. in my case it’s chaos, a hodge podge of interests, obsessions, work and clutter.. Jade bowls, real silver, antique Chinese chests and weird flea-market treasure…books, art and who knows what.. it is what it is..

I wouldn’t say my home is my castle, its more like a tree fort or pirate’s lair.

Which works for me, in all it’s (no room havin) glory.. personal comfort isn’t a physical thing with me.. (not that it isn’t all dry, snug and warm etc).. comfort is more about letting my mind wander without constraint and doing exactly what I want to, when, where and how..

All of which is written as a thank you for various likes and follows.. because I can’t quite figure out how to find the message thingy and be direct..
